 Best Known As: Non-violent leader of Indian independence 

A major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian Independence movement, Gandhi is a worldwide icon of non-violent political resistance.  In India, he is oficially honoured as the "Father of The Nation".  He attended law school in England and then spent 20 years defending the rights of immigrants in South Africa.  After returning to India in 1914 he became the leader of the Indian National Congress.  Gandhi was also an advocate of simple living.  He ate vegetarian and made his own clothes.
